TEXTURE: 2018 Statewide Photography Exhibition

Exhibition: November 10, 2018 through January 12, 2019. 

Many artists who savor life at one 200^th of a second – usually the camera’s shutter speed – transformed subjects and scenes from the ordinary to the extraordinary in the Brigham City Museum’s Annual Photography Competition and Exhibition. Because there were no limitations as to where the photographers could shoot, the world unfolds through their images, which are on display Nov. 10 through Jan. 12. “Texture” is the exhibit’s theme, which challenged photographers to capture high levels of detail in their work.

The museum is located at 24 North 300 West. New hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. Admission is free. For questions, please phone (435) 226-1439.

Participants discovered many elements of intrigue in their viewfinder, specifically Roman baths, an Amazon rainforest, Antelope Island, the forest floor of the Oregon Coast and White Pocket at Vermilion Cliffs National Monument. Many photographers zoomed in on their subject, carefully picking out fine details and repetitive patterns on an elephant, mushrooms, a tree knot that looks like a lion, salt wells, and rusty number “5.”

Some of the artists stayed indoors to produce their images, notably candy crystals, while others stepped outside to find something distinctive to shoot, specifically a scarred vintage trunk on a baggage cart and an old, abandoned, Sinclair gas station.

In order to impart an enchanting quality to a variety of flowers, artists tilted their camera to get an interesting viewpoint, presented the subject to one side of the frame and used long exposures, to name a few techniques.

Juror for the competition was Amanda Castillo, Logan, Utah. She selected the following artists for awards because of their ability to impart emotion as well as narrative in their works: Valerie Held, Brigham City, First Place for “Elephante”; Thomas C. Bunn, Mendon, Second Place for “Feeder to the Great Salt Lake Salt Wells”; “Roxie Crouch, Willard, Third Place for “Entrance.”

The juror also recognized the following artists for Merit awards: Cindy McKonkie, Valerie Held, Randy Rapp, and Lynette Bradford Reeder, all from Brigham City; and Carol Dittli, Perry.

The museum purchased works (Purchase Prize) from the following artists: Valerie Held, Randy Rapp, Cindy McKonkie, and Thomas C. Bunn.

Awards totaled $1,000. A ceremony to honor participants will be held at the museum on Jan. 12 at 4 p.m. Refreshments will be served. The public is invited.
